Biblical Perfume – Galbanum
Biblical Perfume – Galbanum
« Resurrection »
“Then the Lord said to Moses, Take fragrant spices—gum resin, onycha and galbanum—and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts, and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred…”
Exodus 30, 34
COMPOSITION
A perfume made of galbanum, an umbelliferous plant originating from Persia, magnified by patchouli and rosewood whose head notes are the result of a successful blend of yellow citruses. Galbanum bolsters and accentuates the
substances it is mixed with. Its scent is woody, balsamic, green, musky, acute and intense. Galbanum is an umbelliferous plant originating from the Middle East. It spontaneously produces a milky juice which, when dried, takes the form of a “tear
resin”, with a waxy yellow colour and a hint of green – called Galbanum.
REFERENCES
It was used by Egyptians as incense to be burnt, as a cosmetic product, and in embalming rituals. Indeed, it gave to the living and the deceased a perfume of eternity. Several millennia before Christ, the Egyptians already believed in
resurrection, and they symbolised their faith in a life beyond death with the cross of life. In the antiquity, the acrid smoke of galbanum has long been used to keep snakes and insects away. It is still used for this purpose in Coptic medicine. Finally, galbanum entered the composition of the most saint of all Hebrew perfumes, the sanctuary incense described in the Exodus. Dioscorides mentions its sedative and analgesic properties. In the current pharmacopoeia, galbanum is still used as tonic and stimulant, in addition to its action on kidneys. In aromatherapy, it is prescribed for anxiety.
